“Thank God I’m here in this beautiful neighborhood”: Senior living community in North Baton Rouge is more than just a place to stay

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) – A new senior living neighborhood is bringing community, safety and comfort to North Baton Rouge.

“Thank God I’m here in this beautiful neighborhood,” resident Mylinda Smith said.

Today was the grand opening of Hollywood Heights and Acres Community. It offers 90 units to people aged 55 years and older. It’s not just a place to stay, it’s a community where neighbors look out for each other.

“It truly is coming and providing safe, clean housing for the community. But also comes in and you can tell, it is a community,” Rob Coats, President and CEO of The Banyan Foundation, said.The Banyan Foundation, a non-profit based in Alabama, and Partners Southeast, a local affordable housing developer, as well as several other groups and organizations came together to bring this all to seniors in North Baton Rouge.

“We’re talking about an area that’s been disinvested over a course of decades. So, any time you have the ability to bring tens of millions of dollars to a community, that’s something that should be considered,” J. Wesley Daniels, Jr., CEO of Partners Southeast, said.

With the ribbon cutting set for Valentine’s Day, the love for a new community and new beginnings was in the air.

“We love our seniors. They are our generational factors that really aid us in our development. So any time we have the ability to really service our seniors, our most vulnerable population, we couldn’t ask for a better day,” Daniels said.The neighbors love it too.

“And I love it, love it, love it, beautiful,” Smith said.

Smith moved into her new home here a year and a half ago. While driving around, she saw the community and instantly fell in love. Compared to her previous home, she says this one is “50 thousand times percent better. Better, better, better. Living arrangement, everything, the community, everything. Very safe, everything is very good over here.”

And for the developers and partners, it’s an ongoing mission to keep that feeling alive.“People are so accustomed to developers coming in and leaving, and so we have a stigma that is put on us until we prove them wrong,” Coats said. “They want to make sure we’re going to be here; they were telling us we want to make sure this is our home for a long time. So with that and with the communication and collaboration, it turned out to be something that everybody can be proud of.”

Rent at Hollywood Heights and Acres is a tax credit based on your income. While they are almost at full capacity, if you are over 55 years old and are interested in living here, applications for the waitlist are open.

Senior housing project on Baton Rouge’s old Earl K. Long charity hospital site gets $2M grant

BATON ROUGE, LA – Redevelopment of the former Earl K. Long Medical Center is moving forward after a Dallas-based bank awarded Partners Southeast with $4 million for a planned senior living community.

Partners Southeast was awarded the grant by the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas for its Cypress at Wards Creek and Capstone at North Point senior living communities, according to an announcement from the housing developer.

Efforts to transform the Earl K. Long Medical Center have been ongoing for nearly a decade. The public, state-run hospital closed in 2013 and was demolished in 2015. The land, where Airline Highway crosses Greenwell Street, sat empty while multiple attempts to redevelop it stalled out over the past 10 years. 

The East Baton Rouge Housing Authority, a parish agency that works to develop affordable housing, purchased the property from LSU in 2023. Partners Southeast, which handles development for the housing authority, and Alabama-based nonprofit the Banyan Foundation proposed the redevelopment.

Each of the two communities will receive $2 million of the $4 million awarded, and a 65-unit facility will be the first phase of building at the former hospital’s location, according to the announcement.

When complete, plans call for the two senior housing communities to have 113 units, “aging in place” amenities, as well as wellness services, child care and education resources.

This was the largest award from the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas and is part of $78.9 million in affordable housing grants distributed to communities in Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, New Mexico and Texas, according to Partners Southeast.

Partners Southeast and Entergy Unveil Entergy’s Power Through Program to provide backup power for Cypress Pinchback Senior Community

[Baton Rouge, LA] – Partners Southeast, in collaboration with Entergy Louisiana, is proud to announce a special ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the installation of two state-of-the-art backup generators as part of the utility’s “Power Through” program. The event will take place at Cypress Pinchback, a premier mixed-income housing community dedicated to supporting
Baton Rouge’s seniors’ health, wellness, and security. This significant event will celebrate a joint effort to enhance energy resilience for vulnerable populations, especially as the Gulf Coast prepares for future storm seasons. The Power Through program, developed by Entergy, focuses on providing an affordable solution to backup power and supporting community
resilience in Louisiana.

The program’s benefits are two-fold: First, the natural gas generators provide backup power to Cypress Pinchback if the facility were to experience a power outage. Second, the generators will send power to Entergy’s electric system during peak demand, like when it is very hot or cold, and serve the broader community’s power needs. The addition of these generators, funded by Partners Southeast, underscores the commitment to reducing outage durations, speeding up recovery times, and lessening the community impact of major storms in Baton Rouge.

The Power Through program at Cypress Pinchback serves as a shining example of public-private partnership, integrating meaningful resources to improve the lives of Baton Rouge families. The 99-unit residential community, featuring amenities like community rooms, outdoor areas, a gym, and wellness center, was designed to allow seniors to “age in place” with dignity and safety. Thanks to this new power solution, seniors can rest assured that their health and safety needs-such as keeping medications cool and maintaining essential power-will be supported, even in adverse weather.

“After the 2016 floods, the State of Louisiana concluded that our senior citizens were the most vulnerable population impacted by disaster response, recovery, and housing challenges,” stated J. Wesley Daniels Jr., CEO of Partners Southeast. “Now, with Entergy’s Power Through solution, our seniors at Cypress Pinchback will have the safety, comfort and security of
uninterrupted power.”
